The Day I Became An Abstract Photographer
I waited so long for the contract on the Blackberry to run out. I'd been looking at iPhone images online for months and decided I wanted some of that. Like so many others, the move to a smart phone caused an explosion of photography for me.
I think the first app I downloaded to my new phone was Hipstamatic, having seen very some stylish Hipsta images on the web and very much wanting to try my hand at that stuff. I took a shot of my kitchen bench top, by accident if I recall correctly. The shadows cast by the objects on the bench became the subject of my first abstract image. And the second. And so on.
I was hooked, having captured something that looked so cool, by accident. I'm still having accidents with my photography, in fact I try really hard to leave as much as possible to chance. Sometimes not knowing where you're going takes you somewhere unexpected and wonderful. There wasn't a great deal of skill involved in taking these, but the result gave me a thrill. I liked them and I still do. That's all that matters with your photography. The moment you start assessing whether your pictures are any good is the moment when your enthusiasm may start to drain away. You make pictures for yourself only.
